Raf was born and raised in Austria. Since graduating from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, he has worked exclusively with horses in Germany, Belgium, Scotland, and the US both in busy private referral hospitals and academic institutions. An internship (Université de Liège) and residencies in Equine Surgery (University of Glasgow; North Carolina State University) prepared him to pass board examinations to become a Diplomate in the American and European College of Veterinary Surgeons and the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. Along the way, Raf also obtained a Master’s degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Glasgow and a PhD from NC State University and has remained an active clinical researcher with a strong publication history in the field of equine lameness and surgery. More recently his interests have included the exploration of novel treatment approaches for equine cutaneous tumours.

Raf joined REC Equine Specialists in 2022 in a part time position and provides his experience in equine surgery, oncology and sports medicine along with his training in acupuncture to REC patients which now also includes weekly clinics in the Canberra region at Capricorn Park.
